BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS IN HOMEOPATHY

I recently gave a butterfly remedy called Silver Spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus) to a young lady who was artistic but had difficulty manifesting her artistic talents. Her childhood was characterized by a lack of guidance by her parents and she got in with the “wrong crowd”. She then “flitted” around from place to place, unable to settle and felt frustrated in life. Physically she had constant vertigo. Following the prescription (which really helped her) she remembered a few years previously having recurring dreams and visions of moths everywhere in her life. The Butterfly and Moth remedies fulfill a very important role in our material medica. Patricia le Roux was the homeopath (now sadly passed) who did more for our understanding of these beautiful creatures. Nancy Herrick also did a wonderful proving of the Limenitis butterfly which contained many of the general butterfly themes. I believe these beautiful yet ephemeral insects could be used a lot more in our practices. So I thought in this blog I would explore the themes of a few of these butterfly and moth remedies*. *With thanks to Patricia le Roux, Lou Klein, Pat Maher, Enna Stellinga   THEMES OF BUTTERFLY AND MOTH REMEDIES Neglected or unsupervised children or children in danger Lack of guidance as a child Innocent, immature, incomplete transitions, delayed development Gender/sexuality confusion; cross dressing, transexuality Loves clothing, beauty, silk Fine slender build Peter Pan/ nymph-like Sexual boundary issues esp. between children and adults Desire to protect children; working with children (e.g. teachers) Own world, dreamy, in a cocoon, play, amusement, fun Grief over loss of child; sudden loss of children/parents Dreams...

THE SPIRIT IN THE MACHINE

“The human body is often likened to a high performance machine…” So begins an article I saw today in the Daily Mail by the wonderful Bill Bryson. Bryson goes on to implore us to behold the wonder of our bodies. But it set me thinking how differently homeopaths conceive of our bodies than most conventional medics. Most graduates from medical school do think of the body like a car with an engine with more or less replaceable parts. But it goes further than that. Disease is seen as something separate from us. Something we need to fight, whether it be bacteria, viruses or cancer. Even the language use is indicative: We say “I have a flu” (the flu is separate from us);  might it be more accurate to say “I am flu-ing.”? And this leads to an aggressive concept of drugging to counter the perceived external threat with anti-biotics, anti inflammatories, anti-depressants etc. Homeopathy has a radically different idea. Firstly symptoms are not the disease. Imagine the oil light in your car comes on ( a symptom of low oil). The conventional medical parallel would be to rip out the car light or at least stop it from lighting up. But then when the engine fails everyone denies the connection. Just an unrelated incident. Homeopaths have a concept that the medics may think of as pure woo-woo! The “Vital Force”. Sounds a bit Star Wars doesn’t it. But in fact the Vital Force exists in many traditional medicine cultures (in India it’s “Ki”; in China it’s known as “Qi”) The Vital Force in homeopathy is the energy field that keeps us healthy but also...

SCEPTICAL MUM AMAZED AT HOW HOMEOPATHY HELPS HER TEEN SON WITH CRIPPLING SOCIAL ANXIETY

“I had little belief in homeopathy until I met Jonathan. I had just moved into Brighton and my 17 year old son was living with me. He was unable to attend college or get a job due to crippling social anxiety and depression that had been going on for 5 years since his father had left the family. Jonathan encouraged me to try homeopathy even though I’d had no experience of it and, frankly, was rather sceptical. The change in my son was nothing short of amazing. He was soon able to attend college and take a job. I firmly believe Jonathan’s homeopathic remedies to be the start of his recovery”. Ms LA  This is not an uncommon situation. Many teens go through a phase of anxiety as part of their growing pains. My 30 years as a registered homeopath has shown me that Homeopathy can help reduce anxiety and bring mental and emotional balance. Homeopathy is great for families! SCARLET FEVER AND THE DEADLY NIGHTSHADE CONNECTION

Today on the BBC News website I read: A new strain of group A streptococcus, which is able to produce significantly more toxin, is spreading in England and Wales, scientists say. Strep A causes a range of infections, from a sore throat to scarlet fever. The new strain’s emergence, reported in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, coincides with a rise in rare but potentially deadly invasive infections. However, it does not explain the mysterious surge in scarlet fever cases during the past five years It got me thinking about how we homeopaths go about treating Scarlet Fever and the use of Deadly Nightshade (or Belladonna) as one of the main homeopathic remedies in treating this condition. The history of poisonous Belladonna, used as a homeopathic remedy makes fascinating reading… The original proving of belladonna was conducted by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (the founder of homeopathy). Dr. Hahnemann described prophylactic effects of the medicine when used in treatment for scarlet fever. Interestingly, he discovered the potential prophylactic effect during an outbreak of scarlet fever in 1799, when three children of four in a family under his care became ill. The fourth, who was usually the first to become ill, remained free from disease. Dr. Hahnemann reasoned that since the child had been taking belladonna for an affliction of the finger joints, she was in some way protected from the infection. Dr. Hahnemann continued to make frequent use of belladonna during this epidemic with great success. So great was his success that many conventional physicians adopted his treatment protocol and began singing the praises of homeopathic belladonna. Dudgeon reports on 10 allopathic physicians...

4 COURSES OF ANTIBIOTICS FAILED AND THEN HOMEOPATHY STEPS IN…

I’ve nothing against mainstream medicine. In emergencies particularly it’s fantastic. But sometimes it just doesn’t work.  I’ve just treated a young child for repeated ear infections and eczema. Here’s what mum had to say about homeopathy… “My 18 month old daughter India suffered with terrible eczema and repeated ear infections. Constant trips to the doctors resulted in four courses of antibiotics and no improvement whatsoever. From the moment we sought Jonathan’s help everything changed. Now after only a couple of weeks her ear infections and eczema have completely cleared up. I can’t recommend Jonathan highly enough!”HM, Brighton. This is just one example of the wonderful healing potential of homeopathy. Safe, Natural, Effective. Homeopathy can help depression • anxiety • panic attacks • stress • high blood pressure • chronic fatigue • M.E. • period problems • hot flushes • asthma • thyroid disorders • eating disorders • hay fever • autism • ADHD • IBS • ulcerative colitis • arthritis • eczema • dermatitis • allergies • injuries • ear, nose and throat issues • colds • flu • migraines • urinary infections • sciatica • insomnia • pregnancy problems • infertility • prostate problems • chemotherapy/radiotherapy side effects • HIV-related symptoms… and more Book your FREE 30 minute chat with me to find out how homeopathy can help you and your family. Amber Cures the Blues

I’m one of those poor souls that gets SAD when Autumn and Winter come. I feel like I’m walking in a fog, lost in a fog actually! I’m trapped in my head. All problems seems 10 x worse and I’m counting the weeks till Spring returns. I decided to take things into my own hands and I repertorised Delusion: Lost and < Cloudy Weather. Up pops Succinum Purum (latin for Amber). I took a dose and so far I’m back in my body. My vital energy has returned and feel relatively normal. The homeopathic proving of Amber is actually very interesting. It was conducted by the great Irish homeopath Nuala Eising. Nuala considers Amber to be one of our deep polycrest remedies. Issues of feeling displaced (like immigrants… I’ve actually just moved to a, for me, strange town in Hastings), or not belonging to your family came up. These immigrants sometimes make a fantasy about their homeland, or adopted children can make a fantasy about their natural family. Together with this there is a tremendous restlessness that makes us think of Tuberculinum. There is also a ‘veneration for the sun’ (amber was considered in ancient times to be solidified rays of the sun) which reminds us of SAD that so many suffer. And there is a feeling of being trapped which is interesting as many insects got trapped in the sticky resin that became amber over millennia. So I’m putting this out there in case Amber could be a great remedy for SAD. Please write to me if you have any good stories of using Amber in this way.  ...

WONDERFUL PLANTS!

Wonderful Plants An Introduction to Jan Scholten’s Plant Theory I would like to invite you to attend a FREE introductory webinar on Jan Scholten’s amazing Plant System leading to 3 weekly webinars that you won’t want to miss. Jan Scholten’s theory of the minerals and elements allowed both new insights into remedies in current usage and the ability to predict the profile and themes of any element or salt, even those that have never been used or contemplated before. The result of this has been to allow much greater precision in prescribing and a much greater depth of cure. Now, in his new system of Plant Theory, each family and plant species are classified using the periodic table as its basis. There are many plant remedies in the Materia Medica, but most have very small pictures or just a few keynotes. In this FREE webinar -“Wonderful Plants, -an introduction to Plant Theory” – International lecturer and experienced Homeopath Jonathan Stallick will introduce Scholten’s Plant theory and how he has found using this system is like opening an Aladdin’s cave of treasures. It allows us to treat ‘difficult’ patients where the case seemed complex and the correct remedy elusive. He will show that this system brings out the fuller personality of each plant remedy and it enables us, as with the periodic table, to predict the themes and uses of virtually any plant in existence. This is not empty ‘head stuff’! There are now many homeopaths using this way of prescribing and it is backed up by thousands of cured cases. And the great thing is you can use it...

JS GOING ON HOLIDAY

Hello there, Just a quick note to let you know I’ll be on holiday from 17th February till 7th March. A much needed winter break in Cape Town where I have some lovely homeopathic friends. If you’ve never been to South Africa please do put it on your bucket list. It’s my favourite place on the whole planet. If you love nature you will be in heaven. The famous Fynbos (or moorlands) contains more different plants per square mile than any other place on earth. And the Erica family is particularly well represented. If you have an emergency requiring homeopathy I will still be picking up my emails and should be able to respond within 24 hours. Otherwise I’m back on 7th March and you can book appointments as usual on my calendar app: http://jonathanstallick.com/online-booking/ Have a great time while I’m away and look forward to seeing you soon....

Passed Down Through Time

It occurred to me recently how often patients come with a problem that is either inherited or left over from an event that happened years ago. Sometimes it can be fairly obvious such as  presenting with recurring bronchial complaints when the parent had TB at some stage of their life. But in other cases it can be quite complex and hidden. I remember a lady some years ago who was presenting with asthma and irritable bowel syndrome. I gave the more obvious remedies but there was no change in her condition. After a few sessions where we weren’t getting very far I asked her if she had ever had a back injury. You see, the nerves from the spine serve every part of the body and if compromised can cause problems not directly associated with the back. Well, the lady in question suddenly recalled falling into a hole in the ground some years earlier and damaging her back. She didn’t have any treatment for it and the back pain resolved on its own. However after that the asthma and bowel problems started.  I gave the lady Hypericum (one of the symptoms of Hypericum is breathing aggravated by foggy weather which is what this lady experienced) and all the symptoms resolved. In other cases old vaccinations can be the cause or a stressful event. Sometimes this stressful event can be in the lives of our ancestors. One well known homeopath is having success treating the horrific wartime experiences in parents that are somehow still causing problems in their children. Too many antibiotics given for infections or inflammations is another common aetiology...

AIDS: The Homeopathic Challenge. Memories from the 90’s.

This is a short excerpt from a ‘Homeopathic Companion’ I am currently writing. At the London Lighthouse there was a residential unit where those needing respite could stay for a week or so and receive intensive care by a team of dedicated nurses. I was one of a number of complementary therapists who might be called upon to treat the residents and I remember the nurses were often amazed at the effects of homeopathy and would send me their difficult patients. One such case that sticks in my mind was an African man who was descended from one of the great African leaders. He presented, however, a most pitiful picture. His nurses told me that he was very frightened so much so that he wouldn’t talk to anyone. He had a history of TB, syphilis and many other diseases that I cannot remember now. He looked defeated and his story was remarkable. This man had been captured and sent to a concentration camp where he suffered the most brutal tortures and humiliations (he recounted how women pissed on his legs as part of this process). He was terrified and would have frightening flashbacks. Strangely I remember feeling joyful as he recounted his story because I knew homeopathy could make big difference for this man and I was glad he had come for treatment. I gave him Aconite, Stramonium and Opium in alternation knowing I would only have one chance to treat this patient as he would be gone from the unit after a week. A different man returned a week later: confident, chatty and laughing. The nurses were amazed...

Standing Up for Homeopathy!

The other evening I was at a pub in Brighton and chatting to a guy I know (who happens to work for the NHS as a researcher). He told me about all his health problems and I, slightly tongue in cheek, asked whether he had considered homeopathy as an alternative. I wasn’t prepared for the response of his friend who launched into a tirade against homeopathy. ‘Oh homeopathy, that’s all a load of rubbish, it doesn’t work, there’s no scientific evidence’. Now, I was out for drink and a nice time and wasn’t really prepared for an intense conversation about homeopathy. However, I confess I felt personally affronted by this man. We have to face the fact that homeopathy is an easy target. Sometimes when we talk about it homeopathy can sound borderline magical. However, that is before you take into account the facts that homeopathy has an abundance of scientific evidence in its favour, is used by around 400 million people around the world, is considered mainstream in India, is used by farmers (who let’s face it are not normally ‘new agers’) for their livestock, is used by thousands of doctors around the world. But a small number of ‘flat earth’ activists (some with the support of big Pharma) are committed to spreading disinformation about homeopathy. Their first line is ‘there is no scientific evidence that homeopathy works’. That, unfortunately for them, is simply not true and they think that if it is said enough times it will somehow become true. Thankfully, these activists are a small, if vocal, minority. So, back to my nice evening out and I decided to...
